BIA completely accepted by nutritionists
Dr. Anja Bosy-Westphal, (professor at the Institute for Nutrition at the University of Hohenheim, Hohenheim, Germany) spoke about the benefits of using BIA in the treatment of overweight patients. She explained how BIA raw data such as the phase angle and Bioelectric Impedance Vector Analysis are applied to body composition estimate in cases of obesity.
In her lecture, Dr. Kristina Norman (nutritionist in the Department of Gastroenterology, Infectiology and Rheumatology, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany) covered the applicability of BIA for malnourished patients. The BIVA in particular, she said, delivers valuable information for detection of malnutrition caused by disease and helps with monitoring patients’ nutritional therapy.
None other than Dr. Manfred J. Müller (professor and head of the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food Science, Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel/Germany) and Dr. Marinos Elia (professor at the Institute of Human Nutrition and Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, Southampton General Hospital, Great Britain) co-chaired the workshop and led the lively follow-up discussion.
